The settings for accounts are stored in profiles. To create a new profile for
a hosting account click the 'New' button in the upper right of the dialogue
box. To continue with this tutorial click the 'New' button in the screenshot
below.
There are four fields to fill in on this screen (you may ignore host type). First give the profile a name. This can be anything. Then enter the host, username, and password for the hosting account. Once this is completed click the 'OK' button at the bottom and WS_FTP will try to connect to the hosting account.
To continue this tutorial click the 'OK' button in the screenshot below.
Once the connection has been established WS_FTP will close the dialogue box and switch to the main window. The files on the local system will appear on the left, while the files on the hosting server will appear on the right. There are no files in hosting directory in the screenshot below.
Files can be moved from the local system to the hosting server by double-clicking
on them. To continue this tutorial click on 'index.html' in the screenshot below.
After WS_FTP moves the files to the server they will appear on both the left and the right, as they are on both computers. Information about the transfer is displayed in the pane at the bottom of the program.
Should a firewall interfere with the connection, the problem will most likely
manifest during the upload stage. This may be corrected by altering the passive
transfers setting found in the 'Options' section. To continue this tutorial
click the 'Options' button in the screenshot below.
The passive transfer setting is on the 'Session' tab. It is checked by default. Uncheck it and click 'OK.' This should only be done if there is a transfer problem induced by the presence of a firewall.
To continue this tutorial click 'OK' in the screenshot below.

Once the passive transfer setting has been changed, disconnect by clicking the 'Close' button. It will then turn into a 'Connect' button. Click it and try again. In many cases the firewall will not present any further problems.
To return to the tutorial list click the 'Next' button below the screenshot.
